I wrote these acoustic and metal songs throughout the COVID lockdowns and during my time on the PIPE unit. Some took shape with the support of staff who played guitar and made music alongside me. After sixteen years across sixteen prisons, I had never experienced what became possible when staff and prisoners worked together in a supportive psychological environment. That collaboration showed me the power of the arts in criminal justice: music opened a space for trust, expression and growth that I had not found on ordinary prison wings. Music for the Partygate Generation carries the anger and grief of that period, but also the hope those people helped me hear.
